Sara Kovamäki has been working in the Cité internationale des Arts in Paris for two months. The project is called “In the Shadow of the Sun King” and it aims to open up the ways of seeing how the cultural heritage from the Sun King era still affects our beauty concepts in the fields of costume design, fashion, ballet and performing arts. Key element in her research is to investigate how the authentic environment of Versailles affects the creative process and final outcome. Together with the Finnish costume designer Maris Sirén she worked on performance and dance combined with textile art and costume design. The multi layered art and dance performance has been performed twice during the residency period. Back in Finland they continue their work and have a joint performative exhibition in Space for Free Arts in Helsinki.
The whole two-month residency period was of huge importance on many levels for my artistic practice. I made several collaboration projects with other co-resident artists during my stay in Paris and with some of them I will continue working in future too.
