During her stay in Tunis artist Sabrina Issa worked in collaboration with the Tunisian visual artist Atef Maatallah on a project entitled ‘El Msabb’ which aimed to create a public garden in ‘El Kachekh’ at the Medina, a square that for the last ten years has become a garbage dump and an uncontrolled land. The project proposed to transform ‘El Kachekh’ into a public garden with trees, edible and ornamental plants, an urban furniture and a mural painted by Atef Maatallah. This transformation was made in close collaboration with the inhabitants of the Medina (men, women, young people); their implication was crucial in order to ensure the preservation of the space beyond the project lifetime. ‘El Msabb’ aimed to encourage reflection on the use of the public space in Tunisia as well as on the importance to safeguard the local environment. The project results were showcased in the context of Dream City, a contemporary art biennale in public space organised by the Tunisian association l’Art Rue.
We hope that this project will encourage the municipality to reconsider its involvement in this forgotten neighborhood of the medina.
