The project “Future-ing” is initiated by independent curators Aria Spinelli (Radical Intention, Rome) and Maija Rudovska (Blind Carbon Copy, Riga). It imagines diversity in a future Europe and uses socially engaged artistic practices to involve EU citizens and marginal communities (refugees and minorities) in finding new forms of mutual learning, sharing and fulfillment of diverse creative practices. The focus of the project is the question of political, economic and cultural integration. The project outcomes are spread over a three year period: a traveling exhibition, residencies, series of workshops, etc.
The project “From Roots to Routes” is the series of events and activities, that focus on enhancing the visibility for the culture and art from the Baltics abroad. The project is exploring the identity as a fluid concept that is in constant change. It will be hosted by KOLEKTIV and other art institutions in Marseille in 2020, producing an exhibition and a public program.
The host in Rome, independent curator Aria Spinelli (Radical Intention) was chosen because Rudovska collaborated with her previously on an EU project. The host in Marseille, KOLEKTIV was chosen from the references of Rudovska’s network in France and because the institution focuses on building collaborations with people and organizations from Eastern Europe.
The trip was very successful, because I managed to arrange a significant amount of meetings and studio visits with curators, artists, culture managers, directors of non-profit organizations and museums. Additionally to that I saw exhibitions and art events that gave me a deeper understanding of the art scenes in both cities. The insight gained in this trip will definitely help me to develop projects in partnership with people and institutions from Rome and Marseille.
