Scottish Sculpture Workshop (SSW) in Lumsden is a making & thinking facility that offers time, space, support and facilities for artists to develop their practice, with an emphasis on experimentation and exploration of sculpture within the expanded field. Maarit Mustonen worked with them because of their expertise and values. Mustonen’s past work is in lens-based images, writing, and performance; but for this residency working with sculpture was new and allowed her to expand her future artistic practice. At SSW she received technical, curatorial support and facilities. For the past 4 years Mustonen has worked outside of institutions such as art schools.
The experience of sharing the time with other people was very important and I was lucky to be supported by a very professional and kind staff, technicians and peer artists. I also remembered that best things happen when sharing things with others.
